Lecture is on July 16, 2011 from 2-3 p.m. Ceramic artist Glenn Schwaiger will discuss “La Placita”, his tile art project by the Downtown Mall which is nearing completion and he will address issues in the design process and the collaborations with city officials, contractors and other artist who have assisted in the creation of this new city landmark. Schwaiger will also discuss his previous public art projects such as the Entrada del Sol, an archway to the east of the Mesquite Historic District, which was completed with tiles designed and assembled by Schwaiger and neighborhood residents. The focal point of the park is a large, earth-toned arch decorated with hand painted tiles. Schwaiger was also the artist in charge of restoring the historic tile during the preservation of the Rio Grande Theater. After completing studies at NMSU Schwaiger began work as an instructor at Dona Ana Community College. He has been teaching ceramics courses and art appreciation for eight years. Glenn Schwaiger is also the 2009 recipient of the Dona Ana Arts Council Awards for Art in Public Places Award. This award, sponsored by Studio D Architects, recognizes an individual or group who has created or placed art on permanent public view in Doña Ana County that exemplifies the highest standards and commitment to art in public places.
